Three quarters of the public want to work for companies with a good reputation (CBI/Porter Novelli/Opnium 2019); business reputation has improved by 4 points to 60% since September 2018 and, amid the uncertainty of Brexit, 49% of adults think businesses will find the next year difficult. Against this backdrop The Liebherr Group is a values-driven global family business that has pioneered trusted partnership relationships and seen steady growth ever since its formation in 1949. Ralph Saelzer, the managing director of the Sunderland Works Ltd, is joining Professor Lawrence Bellamy, academic dean of Sunderland University’s faculty of business, law and tourism and recent Sunderland graduate Rob Sisson to talk about the importance of responsible leadership in our changing world.

What are the ethical challenges – and opportunities – being brought about by changes in working practice and globalization? As business ethics thinking enters new territory to consider these challenges it’s vital that we encourage the next generation of business leaders to consider the ethical dimensions of evolving technologies and new working practices and their impact on work and business. The evening will comprise a series of short presentations followed by discussion.

Ralph Saelzer is the German-born md of Liebherr Sunderland Works Ltd, which he joined in 2002. He is passionate about the apprenticeship and skills agenda and holds voluntary posts including Chair of the Sunderland Workplace Health Alliance, Governor of Sunderland College and member of the Make UK Regional Advisory Board
